STEP Programme

STEP, in partnership with its Theatre and Performing Arts Partners, delivers an extensive educational performing arts programme across Southwark which is available to all young people living and learning in the borough.

Projects range from one-off events or workshops to longer-term and more sustained programmes of activity. All work is kick-started at the beginning of the academic year by the STEP Festival which offers free projects to schools and youth groups throughout November.

STEP is also a resource for young people, schools and youth and community groups to come in order to access the many opportunities already available in the borough as well as look to create new offers through STEP. If you are a young person, a school or a youth group looking to create new links with a theatre or perfoming arts organisation, find out about performances or create a new performing arts project then contact STEP for new contacts, connections and ideas.

STEP Festival

The STEP Festival is the highlight of the STEP Year-Long Programme. The jam-packed fortnight in November offers a diverse programme of free events, performances and workshops to all schools in Southwark, all made available by STEP and its many partner organisations. The Festival is an annual opportunity to celebrate theatre created by, with and for young people in Southwark.

The STEP Festival combines in-school workshops for Early Years Centres, Nurseries, Primary and Secondary schools in Southwark alongside out-of-school activites for young people of all ages who live and learn in the borough.

Ian McKellen, who opened the first STEP Festival in 2004, said:
Congratulations on starting this initiative. The reason it’s important for me is because theatre isn’t academic – you have to get up on your feet and participate and experience it and that chance to perform should be available to all of us. STEP can make that possible in Southwark. The beauty of theatre is that it allows us to discover our place in society. Why? Because all the world’s a stage.
