Are you 16-25 years old? Would you like to be a part of one of London’s most vibrant outdoor theatrical events of 2013?
Tangled Feet are currently looking for aspiring actors, dancers and musicians to complete our ensemble.
In 2013 Tangled Feet are making a new outdoor performance in collaboration with Greenwich+Docklands International Festival (GDIF). This piece, with a working title of ‘Domino Effect’, will be a large-scale outdoor show, which will include opportunities for 100+volunteer performers working alongside a core ensemble of 10 actors.
The narrative of show is focused around youth unemployment and opportunity for under 25s in London. One of the thematic threads will be the long-term cause and effect of this lack of opportunity - how does it affect society at large? What will be the effect in 20 or 25 years?
The early years of adult life are, simultaneously, explosively powerful, filled with enormous energy, and a fragile and vulnerable time, as identities are carved and pathways into the future forged. What does it mean for a generation to face the start of their working lives at the time of economic recession?
The show will address the challenges that face young people as they try to get careers 'off the ground' in a landscape that is difficult and at times intensely demoralising. This will be a show with an ultimately optimistic thrust, that feels like it is being powered by the force of youth -the untapped resource of an enormous powerhouse of energy and imagination. Inspired by the idea of cause and effect, but also of the world ultimately re-shapeable by the next generation, the set includes a series of kinetic structures are animated by aerialists, dancers, musicians and flash-mobs.
We talk of 'getting on the career ladder' 'taking the first steps' 'bridging the gap between school and work' but also 'being caught in the trap of unemployment' 'spirals of deprivation' 'locked out of the labour market' – all intensely physical images which have great potential for becoming large-scale, kinaesthetically affective visual metaphors.
This is a show about the narratives of young people and participation is an integral part of the making and performance. The participation will be embedded throughout every level of the company with several different strands which can accommodate young people at different stages of their creative journey.
We imagine we will work with a total of 100-120 young people most of whom will feature in the performance, creating a large chorus who complete the final images
A key element of the work will be a live score, composed for the piece and performed on and around the structures. The piece will have the feel of a giant music video, happening all around and above the head of the audience, which feels like it is powered by the energy and drive of youth.
