Bessemer Grange Primary School

Bessemer Grange Primary School and Children’s Centre is situated in a quiet area of Southwark, overlooking fields. The modern, purpose built school provides a light and pleasant environment conducive to children’s wellbeing. The school’s gardens and nature site provide valuable resources to support learning.
The school currently has approximately 290 pupils on roll, aged between three and eleven. We are a county school, funded and maintained by Southwark Council.
We are a school that fosters a healthy learning environment, which is committed to achievement and developing individual talent.  Our pupils are creative and enthusiastic in everything they do, and we positively welcome, encourage and support parents to be fully involved with their child’s learning. We are a very creative school and ensure that our children participate in a variety of experiences in music, drama, dance and the visual arts. We feel it is important to have a broad and balanced curriculum.
We are proud to be a diverse, fully inclusive and accessible school.
Our intention is to assist our pupils to acquire and develop skills, knowledge and understanding, through well-organised and structured teaching, in order for them to tackle the next stages of their education with confidence.

Why Bessemer Grange is a STEP Education Partner

STEP has opened many doors for our school and has helped to develop the creative opportunities which we provide for our children. All children in our school from Nursery to Year 6 receive a theatre activity at least once a term and this always includes a visit to watch a performance. STEP has helped our school to do this and has enabled the children to experience drama in many forms.
The activities STEP provides show our children what is on offer in their local area which they may not have known about, many of our children now attend classes at Theatre at Peckham at the weekends, for instance.
STEP helps teachers in many ways offering INSET, twilight sessions, a Teachers' Forum and now a Costume and Artefacts Resource Library – plus Beccy is always on hand via email or phone for advice and support. If STEP recommends companies to our school we know they will be good.
STEP is such a good resource for teachers to use it is a general pool for theatres in Southwark. It provides a stepping stone for schools developing creativity and creative partnerships, plus it is free!
The Festival, which is run each year, is a way to reach more schools, that theatres find difficult to work with and for creative schools like ours, a way to meet new people!
